PlayStation Plus comes in three tiers: Essential, Extra and Premium. Essential covers the basics: online multiplayer, a few Monthly Games to claim, cloud saves and member discounts. Extra adds the Game Catalog, a rotating library of hundreds of games. Premium adds classic games, game trials, cloud streaming and a movie catalog on top of that.

Here’s PlayStation Plus tiers explained in plain terms, with current US pricing and the details that trip people up, like what happens to your games when you cancel.

What are the PlayStation Plus tiers?
PlayStation Plus has three tiers. Essential ($10.99 a month) includes online multiplayer, Monthly Games, cloud storage and discounts. Extra ($16.99) adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium ($19.99) adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials, PS5 cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog.

What Is PlayStation Plus?

PlayStation Plus is Sony’s paid subscription for PS5 and PS4. At minimum, it’s what you need to play most games online. The higher tiers turn it into something closer to a game library you rent by the month.

Sony splits it into tiers so players can pay for only what they use. Someone who plays the same two online games all year doesn’t need a catalog of hundreds of titles; someone who likes sampling lots of games might.

Every tier includes the same core: online multiplayer, Monthly Games, cloud storage for saves, Share Play, exclusive discounts and exclusive in-game content.

The key difference from buying games: with PS Plus, access to the included games depends on keeping your membership active. A game you buy outright stays yours to play regardless.

PlayStation Plus Essential

Essential is the entry tier and the one most players need at minimum. It includes:

  • Online multiplayer for games you’ve bought on disc or from the PlayStation Store
  • Monthly Games to add to your library each month
  • Cloud storage to back up game saves and download them to other consoles
  • Share Play, which lets you invite a friend to watch your game or take control from their console
  • Exclusive discounts on the PlayStation Store
  • Exclusive content packs for select free-to-play games

How Monthly Games work

Each month, Sony offers a handful of games every member can claim. For example, the PS Plus October 2026 games are F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896 and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2, available from October 6 to November 2. Sony notes the lineup can vary by region.

The important part: you have to add each game to your library during its month. Miss the window and you generally can’t claim it later.

Adding a Monthly Game isn’t the same as owning it. Sony’s own FAQ says PS Plus games are yours to keep for as long as you remain an active member. If your membership lapses, you lose access. If you rejoin later, the games you claimed come back.

PlayStation Plus Extra

Extra includes everything in Essential, plus two additions:

  • Game Catalog: an on-demand library of hundreds of PS5 and PS4 games
  • Ubisoft+ Classics: a curated selection of Ubisoft games, which Sony values at $7.99 a month on its own

What the Game Catalog is

Think of the Game Catalog like a streaming service for games. You download what you want and play as much as you like, but the selection changes over time. Sony adds new games regularly, and some leave.

That’s the key difference from Monthly Games: a catalog game doesn’t stay in your library permanently just because you downloaded it. Sony says some Game Catalog titles have end dates, which it announces ahead of time. Once a game leaves, you can’t keep playing it through PS Plus.

You also need an active Extra or Premium membership to play catalog games. Drop to Essential, and catalog games become unplayable.

PlayStation Plus Premium

Premium includes everything in Extra, plus:

  • Classics Catalog: older games from across PlayStation history
  • Game Trials: time-limited trials of select games, so you can try before you buy
  • PS5 cloud streaming: stream select PS5 games to your PS5 or PlayStation Portal without downloading them. Sony says this requires at least 5 Mbps (15 Mbps for 1080p) and excludes overseas territories.
  • Sony Pictures Catalog: up to 100 movies to watch on demand

Like the Game Catalog, Classics and streaming access depend on an active Premium membership, and the selection changes over time.

PlayStation Plus Pricing

Current US prices on PlayStation.com:

Essential

  • 1 month: $10.99
  • 3 months: $27.99
  • 12 months: $79.99

Extra

  • 1 month: $16.99
  • 3 months: $43.99
  • 12 months: $134.99

Premium

  • 1 month: $19.99
  • 3 months: $54.99
  • 12 months: $159.99

Sony raised 1-month and 3-month prices on May 20, 2026, citing ongoing market conditions. Essential went from $9.99 to $10.99 a month, and Extra and Premium each went up $2. The 12-month prices didn’t change, which makes annual plans noticeably cheaper per month than paying monthly. Sony also notes that subscriptions renew automatically until canceled.

Which PlayStation Plus Tier Should You Choose?

There’s no single right answer. It depends on how you play.

Essential may fit players who:

  • Mainly need online multiplayer for games they already own
  • Buy most of their games individually
  • Are happy with whatever the Monthly Games turn out to be
  • Want the lowest cost

Extra may fit players who:

  • Like trying lots of different games
  • Don’t mind games rotating out over time
  • Would otherwise buy several games a year that might be in the catalog
  • Want Ubisoft+ Classics included

Premium may fit players who:

  • Want to play older PlayStation games
  • Like trying new releases through Game Trials
  • Have a PlayStation Portal or a fast connection and want cloud streaming
  • Would use the Sony Pictures Catalog

The tradeoff is simple: each step up costs more and gives you more to play, but only adds value if you’ll actually use what it adds. A useful test is to look through the current Game Catalog and Classics Catalog on PlayStation.com before upgrading.

Monthly Games vs Game Catalog

This is the part people mix up most.

Monthly Games

  • Available on every tier
  • You add each game during its month
  • It stays in your library for as long as you’re a member, at any tier
  • If your membership lapses, you lose access; rejoin and it comes back

Game Catalog

  • Extra and Premium only
  • You can download any game currently in the catalog
  • Games can leave the catalog, with notice from Sony
  • If you drop to Essential or cancel, you lose access

A simple example: if you claimed F1 25 as an October Monthly Game, you can still play it next year as long as you have any PS Plus tier. A Game Catalog title you downloaded today, though, could leave the service in a few months, and you’d lose access even if you’re still subscribed.

What Happens When a Game Leaves PS Plus?

It depends on how you got it:

  1. A Monthly Game you added to your library doesn’t leave. When the month ends, new members can’t claim it anymore, but you keep access as long as your membership stays active.
  2. A Game Catalog title that leaves the service becomes unplayable through PS Plus, even if you downloaded it. Sony publicizes these end dates ahead of time. Your save data generally remains on your console or in cloud storage, so you can continue if you buy the game later.

Sony’s monthly catalog announcements on the PlayStation Blog are the best place to track what’s arriving and leaving.” Add the link back once the hub is live it’s scheduled for October 6 in your plan

Can You Play PS Plus Games Without a Subscription?

  • Games you bought separately: yes, offline. Online multiplayer in most purchased games still requires PS Plus.
  • Free-to-play games like Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone: Sony says most don’t require a membership to play online.
  • Monthly Games you claimed: not without an active membership. They return if you resubscribe.
  • Game Catalog games: not without Extra or Premium.
  • Classics, Game Trials and cloud streaming: not without Premium.

PS Plus for PS5 vs PS4

PlayStation Plus works on both PS5 and PS4, and your membership is tied to your account, so it carries over if you move from PS4 to PS5.

One change to know about: Sony’s PS Plus page notes that from January 2026, PS4 games are added only intermittently to Monthly Games and the Game Catalog. In practice, recent lineups have leaned heavily toward PS5. In October 2026, only one of the three Monthly Games has a PS4 version.

Cloud streaming in Premium targets PS5 and PlayStation Portal.

How to Upgrade or Change Your PS Plus Plan

According to PlayStation Support, you can change your plan from your console or a web browser:

  1. Go to your account settings and open PlayStation Subscriptions (on the web: Account Information, then PlayStation Subscriptions).
  2. Select your PlayStation Plus subscription, then Change Plan.
  3. Choose your new plan and payment frequency.

How it works:

  • Upgrading takes effect right away. You pay a pro-rated upgrade fee for the time left on your current subscription.
  • Downgrading takes effect at the end of your current paid period.
  • Stacked subscriptions (several codes added at once) must be upgraded together, so the upgrade fee can be larger.

Menu names can differ slightly between PS5, PS4 and the web.

The Bottom Line

With PlayStation Plus tiers explained, it comes down to this: Essential is for online play and Monthly Games, Extra adds a rotating library of hundreds of games, and Premium adds classics, trials, streaming and movies. Match the tier to how you play, and remember that annual plans currently cost much less per month than paying monthly.
